"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"

I cannot tell you how many times I have mindlessly sang the words to this song. Today as I was singing along, I heard a line I have repeated several times but never really thought about. Here are the words so you can see what I'm asking about.

It's the most wonderful time of the year.
With the kids jingle belling,
and everyone telling you,
"Be of good cheer,"
It's the most wonderful time of the year.
There'll be parties for hosting,
marshmallows for toasting and
caroling out in the snow.
there'll be scary ghost stories and
tales of the glories of Christmases
long, long ago.
It's the most wonderful time of the year.
There'll be much mistletoeing
and hearts will be glowing,
when loved ones are near.
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Why does it say "there'll be scary ghost stories"? Is the song about Christmas? Or is it about Fall? I have always thought it's about Christmas which makes sense. But what's with the scary ghost stories? Is it referring to the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future? What do you think?

I've always thought that line was SO WEIRD. I'm glad scary ghost stories aren't part of the Christmas traditions in our family!!
